The study of language development his had periods of great activity and excitement, and the past fifteen years has been such a period. Much of this interest and excitement was generated by a “new” linguistic theory, generative grammar, and the writings of its creator and proponent, Noam Chomsky. Chomsky challenged the then-current theories of language development on two grounds.
