The High Middle Ages 1200-1550

Trevor Rowley begins The High Middle Ages in the late twelfth century.He ends it not with the arrival of the Tudor monarchs on the throne after 1485, as is conventional, but with the destruction of the wealth and power of the Church in the 1530s. The passing of the monasteries marked much more clearly than any change in ruler the transition from an economic and social system based on a balance-however shifting and uneasy-between Church and State. Hereafter the State was to reign supreme.
